Dr. Iddi Ndyabawe talking to parents at Luwero General Hospital before conducting the ROP screening of babies born before Gestational Age of 37 weeks.
In 2006 a multi-disciplinary national Newborn Steering committee (NSC) was established as an advisory body to the Ministry of health (MoH) Maternal and Child health department. This helps in drafting the new born clinical care guidelines for MoH.
Preterm babies born at Luwero General Hospital. Those are babies born before Gestational Age of 37 weeks. These are some of the direct beneficiaries and are being helped to prevent them from blindness.
This is mainly conducted by Dr Iddi Ndyabawe who does the ROP screening using an indirect ophthalmoscope and a fundus camera.
Dr Iddi did the very first study of ROP in Uganda in 2022; at Kawempe National Referral Hospital and Mulago Specialized Women and Neonatal Hospital.
Through the Ministry of health and the Preterm Infant Parents Network-Uganda (PIPNU) a total of 15 preterm babies were screened in the very first episode of ROP screening at Luwero Hospital. This targeted those inpatient and outpatient preterm babies whose birthweight was less than 2000grams and they were between 3-12 weeks of chronological age.
One preterm baby was found needing ROP treatment which was recommended to be administered within one week of diagnosis. This baby’s treatment was facilitated by PIPNU.
Using his expertise as an ROP Specialist, Dr. Ndyabawe conducts the ROP screening and treatment. He further calls for Establishing regular ROP screening programs in all Neonatal Units in Uganda to help curb blindness.
